A fun, crowd-feeding spread inspired by the Indy 500® milk tradition

From wings and sliders to brownies and fresh fruit, this board has something for everyone, making it the ultimate race day snack setup.

If you’ve been around here long enough, you know I take party spreads very seriously. And the Indy 500®? That’s not just a race — it’s basically a national holiday and it absolutely deserves a board to match.

This year I went all out with an Indy 500® party food charcuterie board that’s part game day snack spread, part dinner and part dessert. It has something for everyone: savory, sweet, crunchy, dippable, and of course… cold Hiland Dairy milk. Because if you know anything about the Indy 500®, you know the winner drinks milk in the winner’s circle. It’s tradition.

Why Milk at the Indy 500®? (The Tradition You Need to Know)

Okay, a quick history lesson because this is genuinely one of my favorite fun facts. Since 1936, the winner of the Indianapolis 500 has celebrated in Victory Lane with a bottle of cold milk. It started when driver Louis Meyer requested buttermilk after his win and was photographed drinking it. A tradition was born. Nearly 90 years later, it’s still happening.

So naturally, I grabbed the most festive milk bottles I could find, Hiland Dairy’s Indy 500® themed bottles and made them part of this board. They’re decorated with the race theme and look SO good styled on a spread.

What’s on the Indy 500® Party Food Board

This is not a dainty little appetizer tray. This is a full-on race day spread that can feed a crowd and keep everyone fueled through all 200 laps. Here’s everything I loaded on:

🏁The Savory Side

  • Wings: Because no party spread is complete without them. I went with a classic buffalo sauce and a honey garlic option so everyone’s happy.
  • Sliders: Mini and mighty. These little guys disappear faster than any other thing on a board every single time.
  • Cheese Dip: Creamy, melty, totally addictive. I used Hiland Dairy Sour Cream as the base and it gives it the most perfect tangy richness.
  • Hiland French Onion Dip: Okay, this one is a showstopper. Hiland French Onion Dip is so good straight out of the container. It’s thick, flavorful, and it pairs perfectly with the veggies and chips.
  • Guacamole: Fresh, chunky, and a must on any board in this house.
  • Salsa: Classic red salsa for all the chip-dipping needs.
  • Fresh Veggies: Carrots, celery, cucumbers, bell pepper strips. The thing that makes everyone feel slightly better about eating everything else on the board.
  • Assorted Cheeses: A good mix of textures and flavors. Think sharp cheddar, pepper jack, and a creamy gouda.

🍓 The Sweet Side

Fresh Strawberries: Bright, juicy, and they make the board look gorgeous. Also a great palate cleanser between the savory bites.
Brownies: Fudgy, rich, and cut into small squares so they’re easy to grab.
Cookies: I went with classic M&M. They’re universally loved.
Donuts: Mini chocolate donuts to keep it fun and festive. These are especially great if you have kids at your party — they go FAST.

🥛 The Star of the Show: Hiland Dairy Indy 500® Milk Bottles

They’re not just for decoration — cold milk and ready to drink, exactly like the winner’s circle tradition. It’s a fun detail that your guests will love!

Tips for Building Your Indy 500® Race Day Board

  • Start with your anchors. Place the milk bottles, any bowls, and ramekins first before filling in around them. This keeps things from getting crowded.
  • Work in zones. Keep sweet on one end, savory on the other, and let the veggies and dips live in the middle as the connector.
  • Use height. Stack brownies, prop up the sliders, and lean the cheese against things. A flat board looks less impressive than one with dimension.
  • Fill every gap. Tuck strawberries and mini cookies into all the empty spaces. It should look abundant and overflowing — that’s the goal.
  • Make it easy to eat. Everything should be finger-food friendly or easy to grab with a small plate. Nobody wants to wrestle with their snacks while watching the race.

Make It Ahead So You Can Actually Watch the Race

Here’s my biggest tip: do as much as you can the night before. Chop veggies, pre-bake brownies and cookies, prep your guacamole (press plastic wrap directly on the surface to prevent browning), and lay out your board base with the bowls and bottles. The morning of, all you have to do is cook the wings, heat the cheese dip, and start arranging. It sounds like a lot but once the anchors are in place, the rest comes together in minutes.
