Why We Love This Recipe

Who needs a coffee shop when you can make a barista-worthy drink at home? This recipe combines simplicity and indulgence—just a few ingredients, no fancy equipment needed. And the contrast of creamy milk, sweet strawberry, and bold matcha is incredibly refreshing. You’ll swear you’re at your favorite café—just without the wait (or the price tag).

Ingredient Notes

Matcha Powder: Look for vibrant green color and a smooth texture—this indicates freshness and quality. Culinary-grade matcha is ideal for lattes, as it’s more affordable than ceremonial grade but still delivers rich flavor.

Sweetener: Honey and maple syrup are my favorite sweeteners. Adjust the amount to taste—start with 1 teaspoon and add more if desired. Liquid sweeteners blend seamlessly into the warm matcha, but you could also use sugar in a pinch.

Hiland 2% Milk: My first choice for this latte, but soy, almond and oat also work well. If using plant-based milk, just make sure it’s unsweetened to balance the fruitiness of the strawberry milk.

Hiland Strawberry Milk: The star of the drink! Hiland Strawberry Milk delivers delicious strawberry flavor in every sip. Its natural sweetness and creamy texture make it the perfect pairing for earthy matcha. Keep it refrigerated until ready to use for maximum refreshment.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Prepare the matcha base. Sift 1 teaspoon matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps—this ensures a smooth texture. Add 2 tablespoons hot water and whisk vigorously until frothy.
  2. Sweeten and mix. While the matcha is still warm, stir in 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup until fully dissolved. This helps the sweetener blend evenly. Pour in 1/4 cup Hiland regular milk and whisk lightly to combine. Set aside.
  3. Assemble the layers. Fill a glass 3/4 full with ice cubes. Slowly pour the prepared matcha mixture over the ice, then tilt the glass and gently add 1/2 cup Hiland Strawberry Milk to create a beautiful layered effect.
  4. Garnish and serve. Top with fresh strawberry slices for a pop of color and freshness. Stir just before drinking to blend the flavors, or enjoy the gradient sips!

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Add fresh strawberries to the latte. This is completely optional, but you can also blend the strawberry milk with a handful of fresh strawberries for a more vibrant strawberry layer.
  • Slowly add the strawberry milk. For a layered effect, slowly pour the strawberry milk over the matcha layer. Gently swirl with a spoon right before serving.
  • Chill you glass beforehand. This will keep the drink colder longer.

Make Ahead and Storage Instructions

While strawberry matcha lattes are best enjoyed fresh, you can easily prep components in advance for effortless assembly. The matcha base (whisked matcha powder and hot water with sweetener) can be stored separately in an airtight container in the refrigerator — just give it a quick re-whisk before using. Keep your strawberry milk well-chilled in its original carton until ready to serve.

For gatherings, set up a DIY station with pre-measured matcha concentrate, ice-filled glasses, and garnishes so guests can build their own lattes!
