What You’ll Need:

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Materials

  • Empty Hiland Dairy Milk jug, gallon-sized
  • Green tissue paper
  • Decoupage glue
  • Paintbrush
  • Craft knife
  • Scissors
  • Glue gun
  • Glue sticks
  • Thin tree branches, 4-5 inches long
  • Twine
  • Small stones
  • Moss
  • Clear acrylic sealer (optional)

  • Rinse jug and remove label with warm, soapy water. Allow to dry completely.
  • Using the craft knife, cut a small circular opening approximately 2 1/2 inches in diameter on a flat side of the jug.
    • Tip: Be sure the handle is facing to the back.
  • Use the craft knife to poke a hole underneath the circle for the perch.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 1

  • Using scissors, cut the tissue paper into small- to medium-sized pieces
  • Use decoupage glue to apply the tissue paper pieces to the outside of the milk jug. Repeat this step twice. Allow to dry completely.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 2

  • Attach the twigs to the top of the jug using a glue gun to create the roof.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 3

  • Attach the stones around the outside of the circular doorway using a glue gun.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 4

  • Carefully push a longer twig into the hole just under the doorway to create a perch, and glue in place using a glue gun.
    • Tip: Make the hole bigger using your craft knife, if necessary.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 5

  • Wrap the twine around the spout of your milk jug, gluing with a glue gun as you go. Leave enough length after wrapping the twine around the spout to create a handle.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 6

  • Using scissors, cut shapes out of moss. Attach the moss shapes onto the birdhouse using a glue gun to add outdoor flare.

DIY Milk Jug Birdhouse Step 7

  • Hang the birdhouse in a tree using the twine handle.

Diva’s Tip

Not in the mood to decoupage? Simply spraypaint the outside of your milk jug instead. Let the paint dry completely before assembling the rest.
