Instructions

  • Caramelize the onions. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft and develop a deep golden-brown color, about 30-40 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to avoid burning. Allow the onions to cool slightly.
  • In a food processor, blend the cottage cheese, sour cream, garlic and onion powders, and Worcestershire sauce until mostly smooth. Add the caramelized onions and pulse a few times, just enough to break them into small, evenly distributed pieces.
  • Fold in the chopped chives and season with salt to taste.
  • Serve with your choice of dippers, such as fresh vegetable sticks, crackers or chips.

Hiland Dairy cottage cheese is high in protein, an excellent source of calcium and makes the perfect base for both sweet and savory dips.

Why We Love This Recipe

When blended in a food processor, cottage cheese takes on an irresistibly creamy texture that feels incredibly indulgent. Mix in homemade caramelized onions, and the cottage cheese transforms into a satisfying, flavorful dip perfect for snacking!

Ingredient Notes

Unsalted Butter: Butter adds a rich flavor that enhances the sweetness of the onions as they cook down.

Yellow Onions: Thinly sliced onions cook slowly to become soft and golden, adding sweetness and incredible flavor to the dip.

Hiland Cottage Cheese: While I used small curd cottage cheese for this version, I’ve also tested the dip with large curd cottage cheese and it works well, too.

Hiland Sour Cream: Sour cream adds a bit of tang to the dip and cuts through the sweetness of the caramelized onions.

Worcestershire Sauce: Just a splash of Worcestershire adds a savory, umami punch to balance the sweetness of the onions.

Fresh Chives: Chopped chives add a pop of color and enhance the onion flavor of the dip. Green onions can be used as a substitute.

Step by Step Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: Melt 2 tablespoons of Hiland unsalted butter in a skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced yellow onions and a pinch of kosher salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-40 minutes, adjusting the heat if needed, until the onions are soft and a deep golden-brown. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Blend the base: In a food processor, blend together the small curd cottage cheese, sour cream, garlic powder, onion powder and a teaspoon Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
  3. Add the onions: Add the caramelized onions to the food processor and pulse just a few times to distribute them evenly without fully blending.
  4. Garnish and season: Stir in 1 tablespoon of fresh chopped chives and season with salt to taste. Serve immediately or chill for 30 minutes to let the flavors develop a bit.

Expert Tips and Tricks

  • Slow and steady: Caramelizing onions is key to developing deep flavor, so take your time and don’t rush the process. Low and slow heat is best!
  • Adjust the texture: If you like your dip chunkier, blend the base ingredients first, and fold in the onions by hand rather than pulsing in the food processor.
  • Make it your own: You can add a bit of smoked paprika or a dash of hot sauce for some extra complexity and heat.

Make Ahead and Storage Instructions

This dip can be made up to a day in advance. Actually, allowing it to sit in the fridge for a few hours will enhance the flavors even more!

Store any leftover dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Give it a good stir before serving.

I also love to use this dip as a spread for wraps and sandwiches to add incredible flavor to a quick lunch!

Serving Ideas

This caramelized onion dip is incredibly versatile and works well with all kinds of dippers. It’s great with fresh veggies like carrots, celery and bell peppers. And if you want something a bit heartier, it’s fantastic with chips, crackers or pretzels.
