Ingredients

  • 3 cups Hiland Dairy Milk I use whole milk, but any will work great
  • 1 cup Hiland Dairy Heavy Cream
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ cup semi sweet chocolate chips milk chocolate or dark chocolate are great too
  • 1 can (14 oz) condensed milk
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt

Instructions

  • In a large pot on medium heat, pour the 3 cups Hiland Milk and 1 cup Hiland Heavy Cream. Heat until hot but not boiling.
  • In a separate medium size bowl, add the ½ cup cocoa powder and ½ cup chocolate chips. Use a ladle to pour 2-3 ladlefuls of the milk mixture into the bowl of chocolate. Whisk the hot milk with the chocolate until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Pour the bowl of chocolate mixture back into the pot of milk. Whisk all together until combined.
  • Move heat to low. Add the can (14 oz) of condensed milk, ½ teaspoon of vanilla and ½ teaspoon of salt to the pot and whisk everything together until smooth.
  • Let the hot chocolate heat in the pot on low while serving or pour the hot chocolate into a crockpot on low for easy serving as well.
  • Pour a mugful and add some marshmallows!

Hot Chocolate always reminds me of being a kid and coming in from sledding.

Hands and toes are freezing, you take all the layers off and your mom hands you a mug of rich hot chocolate covered in mini marshmallows. It was a moment where we all sat together and talked about the funny moments of sledding. It was a perfect time to reset and just enjoy the moment.

We always used the packets because they were easy and they were delicious, don’t get me wrong. But I have an incredibly easy and delicious homemade Hot Chocolate recipe that will take about the same time as the packets.

What ingredients do I need to make this Homemade Hot Chocolate?

The ingredients are simple, a mix of milk and real chocolate chips and cocoa. Plus a pinch of salt, because salt is a perfect companion for chocolate. That’s it. Well, the toppings too. Those possibilities are endless.

What type of milk should I use for this Winter Chocolate drink?

I use a mix of Whole Milk and Heavy Cream. I find the mix of the two gives this drink a richness that pairs so well with the chocolate. If you only have a lower percentage of milk, don’t worry, it will still taste incredible.

What kind of Chocolate works well in this Homemade Hot Chocolate?

Any kind! Well, mostly. I love using a classic semi sweet chocolate, but milk chocolate or dark chocolate also taste incredible. Don’t forget the pinch of salt at the end.

Need some suggestions for ways to make this Homemade Hot Chocolate extra special?

  • Add some flavored syrups like: peppermint, toffee, vanilla, caramel, gingerbread. So many yummy options.
  • Add spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, or ginger
  • If you like your Hot chocolate extra rich, add a couple spoonfuls of Nutella

How about Toppings?

  • Marshmallows, of course
  • Whipped Cream or Cool Whip
  • Peppermint crumbs
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Sprinkles
  • Candy Canes
  • Andes or Peppermint Bark
  • Cookies

Just a combination of Hiland Dairy Milk and Heavy Cream, chocolate and a little salt for this classic winter drink.
